About
An investigative documentary record. It exists so that a reader who wants to know what is actually established about a set of widely-discussed allegations can find out, and so that a reader who does not believe it can check.
What this is
This site publishes 128 dated records drawn from a nine-phase research project, each classified by the standard of evidence behind it and linked to the 134 sources it rests on. The records are grouped into separate case files, and they are deliberately kept separate.
The strongest conclusion the underlying research supports is that this material consists of multiple separate issues — distinct proceedings, distinct subjects and distinct evidentiary positions that happen to involve some of the same people. It is not one coordinated story, and this site does not present it as one. Two matters sharing a name in the press is not a connection; documented proximity is not proof of causation; and a commercial incentive is not a documented motive.
Some of what is here is established beyond dispute. Some is a formal allegation that has not been adjudicated. Some is contradicted by the evidence. Some the research simply could not settle. Every record says which it is, and inclusion in the record does not imply wrongdoing.
How it is built
The record is a set of files under version control, not a database and not a content management system. Every record is validated against a schema at build time. There is no browser-based editing, no anonymous contribution and no unlogged change: a change to the record is a change to the repository, and it carries an author and a date.
The build refuses to complete on a number of specific faults, and this is the main mechanism keeping the record honest. A source reference pointing at nothing, a claim with no classification, a relationship with no source behind it, a still-moving record with no date on its position, a source shown as retrieved that was never retrievable, Wikipedia used as evidence, or a piece of media with no rights or alternative text — each of these fails the build rather than reaching a reader.
Corrections are append-only. 21 are on file, each showing the superseded wording beside the corrected wording and the reason for the change. Nothing is quietly rewritten.

What it does not do
It does not score anything. There is no confidence percentage, no bias rating and no corruption index anywhere on this site. A number of that kind would imply a precision the evidence does not have. The classification and the sources behind a record are the confidence system.
It does not treat an absence of evidence as a disproof. Where the record does not support a claim, the site says it is not supported by evidence in this record — not that it has been disproven.
It does not smooth over conflicts. Where the underlying records disagree, the disagreement is published as a disagreement rather than resolved into one authoritative version.
It does not host comments, accounts or user contributions, and it does not track readers across the web.

The Argentina Files operates this website and is responsible for its editorial content and website practices. It publishes publicly under that name. Every record carries its sources, every classification is generated from one shared vocabulary, and every correction stays on the page.
