This case file covers award and voting controversies around Messi, principally between 2008 and 2015. Its defining feature is a documented null: two research phases searched independently for a link between Barcelona's commercial relationships and voting outcomes, and both found none. The 2016–2026 window is a genuine coverage gap that nobody researched, and it is labelled as such rather than filled.

What is established

Several procedural facts are documented in-window: the 2008 CAS ruling on Olympic player release; the 2013 Ballon d'Or voting deadline being moved from 15 to 29 November, announced on 20 November; the 2014 World Cup Golden Ball being decided by FIFA's Technical Study Group after the selection process was changed to that body alone; and the fact that the 2015 Copa América best-player award was not presented at all amid the FIFA corruption scandal. Reported voting percentages — such as the 2010 Ballon d'Or figures — are recorded as reported, because the official FIFA voting-results documents were never retrieved.

No fact tied to this case file's events is on file as established by the record.

What is alleged or disputed

The disputed material is interpretive. Franck Ribéry publicly called the 2013 deadline extension "unfair"; Sepp Blatter said in October 2014 that the Golden Ball "decision was incorrect," and Maradona framed it in terms of marketing. The separate claim that Messi "refused" the 2015 award traces to a single origin recirculated widely and is distinct from the documented fact that the trophy was never unveiled; CONMEBOL neither confirmed nor denied it, so the record notes the absence of confirmation rather than a denial.

No allegation or disputed claim is recorded against this case file's events.

What is not supported

No direct evidence was located tying FC Barcelona's commercial relationships to Ballon d'Or or FIFA voting outcomes across 2010–2015 — Phase 5 preserves this as a deliberate null, not a gap to be filled later, and Phase 2 independently reached the same null on adidas's involvement in Golden Ball selection. Two phases, two searches, two nulls. There is no evidence located of adidas influencing any award selection, and the record's instruction is not to insinuate one absent evidence. A commercial incentive is not a documented motive. The 2016–2026 window has no owner in the research and is flagged as an unresearched gap, not evidence of anything.

No direct evidence located tying FC Barcelona's commercial relationships to Ballon d'Or / FIFA Ballon d'Or voting outcomes

The FIFA Ballon d'Or was a 2010–2015 merger of France Football's Ballon d'Or and the FIFA World Player of the Year, with voting by national-team coaches, captains and journalists, reverting to journalists in 2016. Documented voting controversies of the era are owned by other phases or are Madrid/Ronaldo-centric, not tied to Barcelona's commercial arrangements.

    Why it matters

Honest reporting of an absence of evidence; thinness is the finding.

    What is disputed

INFERENCE/NULL: No retrievable source directly connects a Barcelona commercial relationship (kit, shirt sponsor, or Messi's personal sponsors) to any Ballon d'Or/FIFA voting outcome. Consistent with Phase 2's explicit null result on adidas involvement in Golden Ball selection.

    Counterargument

Award voting is opaque and lobbying/theatre existed (per general commentary); absence of located evidence is not proof no influence existed — but proximity/commercial overlap is not evidence of influence.

The counterargument

The strongest case for suspicion assembles real oddities: the 2013 voting deadline genuinely was extended, Platini joked it was done to please a rival candidate, the 2014 Golden Ball process was changed to a closed-body decision, and Blatter himself later doubted the 2014 result. But every search for a documented act of commercial influence returned nothing, and the very voting percentages that anchor the suspicion were themselves never verified against primary FIFA records. A documented incentive, and even a genuine procedural irregularity, is not evidence that an award was bought.

Counterargument

Award voting is opaque and lobbying/theatre existed (per general commentary); absence of located evidence is not proof no influence existed — but proximity/commercial overlap is not evidence of influence.

No correction in the ledger (data/corrections) is recorded against this case file's events. Corrections are append-only and would appear here the moment one is filed against a record in this case file — this is not a claim that the record has never needed correction, only that none is on file here.
